From the Director:
Welcome to the new year! I am excited about 2022 because it marks the fiftieth anniversary of Title IX, legislation which paved the way for the increased participation of girls and women in sports at every level. Title IX states that “[n]o person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” On college campuses, Title IX has played a significant role not just in expanding women’s sports but in helping to address cases of sexual misconduct. As part of its Women’s History Month programming in March, the Women’s Center will highlight Title IX in a variety of ways, including a virtual lecture about Patsy Takemoto Mink, the first woman of color in Congress and one of the champions of Title IX. Women’s History Month events will be listed on our website; they will also be announced in MyVU and our newsletter and on social media. Stay tuned for details in the coming weeks!
This semester, we will continue to do most of our programs online. One of the silver linings of virtual programming is that we are able to invite people from outside the Vanderbilt community to speak not just at our signature events but also at our standing programs. Just this month, Liz Perez will be discussing the enneagram during Work–Life Workshop; Diana Graber will be speaking about kids and technology at the Parenting Group; and Lauren Easterling will be the guest speaker at Women in the Academy, talking about being authentic to oneself during a job search. Details about these sessions are below.
Each spring, the Women’s Center honors people on campus who are doing work that promotes gender equity or contributes to the achievements, interests, and goals of women in the Vanderbilt community. Recipients of the Margaret Cuninggim Women’s Center Leadership Award, the Mentoring Award, and the Mary Jane Werthan Award have demonstrated a strong commitment to gender equity. Please consider nominating a colleague, student, staff member, or administrator for the important work they are doing. The deadline for nominations is Friday, February 25, 2022. If you have any questions, please contact womenctr@vanderbilt.edu.
Sending my best wishes for a new year filled with good health,
Rory
