Dear Vanderbilt Students,
It is with great sorrow that I write to share that one of our undergraduate students, Andreas Giannitsopoulos, a rising senior in the College of Arts and Science, perished in the Champlain Towers South collapse in Surfside, Florida.
A native of Houston, Texas, Andreas attended St. Thomas High School, where he was a member of the track team, and Annunciation Orthodox School. He attended Baylor University before transferring to Vanderbilt for the fall 2019 semester. An economics major, Andreas made the Dean’s List at Vanderbilt, was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, and was involved in the Vanderbilt Hellenic Students’ Association and the Vanderbilt Innovation and Entrepreneurship Society.
We extend our deepest condolences to Andreas’ family, friends, classmates and faculty as they deal with this unimaginable tragedy.
Our thoughts continue to be with all affected by the disaster as they await news of their loved ones and mourn those lost.
We encourage you to draw on the university’s resources, including the Office of the University Chaplain and Religious Life and the University Counseling Center, for assistance and support in processing this news.
We know this is an incredibly difficult time for Andreas’ family and friends, and for our community. Please do not hesitate to reach out for assistance. We are here to help you in any way possible.
Sincerely,
G.L. Black
Associate Provost and Dean of Students
