Dear Vanderbilt Students,
It is with sorrow that I write to share the tragic news of the death of Gisele Umuhire, a rising third-year professional student in Peabody College pursuing her Masters in Human Development Counseling. While the official cause of death has not been determined, police at this point do not expect foul play.
Gisele was preparing to be a Clinical Mental Health Counselor and was serving as a counseling intern at the Oasis Center. She was active in the community and volunteered with the YWCA Dress for Success program. Originally from Nashville, TN, Gisele attended Harpeth Hall. She completed her undergraduate degree at Vanderbilt in 2016, studying Human and Organizational Development. As an undergraduate student at Vanderbilt, Gisele was frequently on the Dean’s List and studied abroad in Aix-en-Provence, France.
Gisele was a long-time, valued member of the Vanderbilt community and beyond. She was a beloved member of the Human Development Counseling community; deeply saddened by this tragic loss, they will remember Gisele fondly. We extend our deepest condolences to Gisele’s family, friends, classmates and faculty. Our entire community mourns her loss. Please know that support services are available to help you during this difficult time. We encourage you to reach out if you need assistance:
This is a very difficult time for Gisele’s family and friends, and for our community. Please know that we are here to assist you in any way possible.
