Carly Sommerlot, Language Teaching Specialist
Carly Sommerlot has an M.A. in Linguistics with an emphasis on TESL from the University of Iowa, where she taught ESL at the university level. She received her Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2020, specializing in language documentation, description, and syntax of languages of Borneo, Indonesia. Prior to joining the ELC, Carly spent two years as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the National University of Singapore in Singapore, where she continued fieldwork in Indonesia and presented at numerous international conferences. Her research, which has been published in several journals, such as Oceanic Linguistics and the Journal of Southeast Asian Linguistics , focuses on the syntactic description of voice and the verbal phrase in understudied languages of West Kalimantan. In her free time, Carly enjoys camping, hiking, cycling, and gaming.
