Fall 2023

Artistic Activism and the Power of Collective Resistance 2022 and 2023 Program, curated by Selene Wendt

Building on our work in the Spring 2023, the EADJ Program will present a set of vibrant discussions that examine the consequences of social and historical inequities on the southern imaginary, as seen in art from Africa, Latin America, South Europe, South Asia, and the American South. The Fall Program continues to explore the potential for radical collaboration and togetherness across these disparate geographies.

Spring 2023:

Episode 12: Decolonizing the Museum

Episode 12: Wednesday, September 20, 10:00 AM CST

The urgency to decolonize the mind, which also means decolonizing the power structures and institutions that contribute to the perpetuation of coloniality, is among the most important topics of our time. This involves recognizing and addressing the consequences of colonial history and working collectively towards an inclusive understanding of world history. When it comes to museums, the question is how we can re-imagine and re-define how we think about the care and afterlives of stolen artifacts currently housed in European and American collections, without replicating the colonial power structures that we seek to eradicate.  The panelists are Jelili Atiku, Ngaire Blankenberg and Jaclyn Roessel, and the following conversation will be moderated by Selene Wendt.

Speakers:

  1. Ngaire Blankenberg
  2. Jelili Atiku
  3. Jaclyn Roessel
  4. Selene Wendt, (Moderator)  2022/23 EADJ Curator, Founder, The Global Art Project

Episode 13: Undoing the Anthropocene

Episode 13: Wednesday, October 11, 10:00 AM CST

One path towards a more sustainable environment involves a conscious approach to the role of art in terms of raising awareness about environmental issues. This panel brings together artists and creative practitioners whose work conveys the importance of undoing the Anthropocene, as an antidote to capitalization and globalization. Representing various perspectives and geographies, the invited panelists share a mutual interest in confronting climate issues in ways that are as visionary as they are poetic.  The panel will feature Yona Backer, Carolina Caycedo, Andrea Chung and Annalee Davis, and will be moderated by Selene Wendt.

Episode 14: Wednesday, November 1, 10:00 AM CST

Throughout the 2022-23 program Artistic Activism and the Power of Collective Resistance, emphasis has been placed on the direct link between colonial history and the social injustices of our time. This panel confronts the legacy of slavery through a conversation that will explore the correlation between the transportation of enslaved Africans to the Americas and the high numbers of Black and brown individuals who are incarcerated in American prisons today. The panel will feature Kwame Akoto-Bamfo, Michelle Angela Ortiz, Dread Scott and Alberta Whittle, and will be moderated by Selene Wendt.
