Workshop on Network Analysis and the Motion Pictures

Social network analysis is a core method in the digital humanities, often used for understanding the 
relationships between characters, whether in historical or literary contexts.
Participants in this workshop will learn the basics of using network analysis software Gephi, specifically focusing on close analysis of relationships between characters in films.
Workshop participants will come to the workshop having identified a film they are interested in analyzing. Over the course of the 3- hour workshop, they will:
- learn essential technical tools for performing an in depth network analysis of chosen texts
- begin preliminary data visualization and analyses of their texts
- discuss and debate the ways in which film texts may challenge the customary practices of network analysis
- gain an understanding of key literature on networks and network analysis in the field of digital humanities
In the final session, participants will have an opportunity to write up their discoveries as part of a collaborative, multi-authored essay on using network analysis to study film, producing an initial draft by the end of the workshop.
