Dates: August 19th and 20th

Format: Workshops will be held on Zoom; instructional materials will also be available for participants to follow in their own time after the program ends.

Reception: August 20th at 4 PM at the Vanderbilt Digital Humanities Center (1101 19th Ave S. in Nashville, TN).

Day One: Thursday, August 19th

Welcome & Introduction to the Bootcamp

 

11:00 AM -12:15 PM – live via Zoom

Digital Archives & Collections: This session will focus on Omeka, a platform for creating online collections and exhibits. Select a workshop:

Omeka basics- learn the fundamentals of working with Omeka, including metadata, objects, collections, exhibits, and themes

Intermediate Omeka- explore select add-ons and plugins, such as those used to support batch uploads, mapping, and user contributions.

 

1:00 PM -2:15 PM – live via Zoom

Multimedia & Public Engagement: select a workshop

Podcasting – learn podcasting basics from an experienced podcast producer

Branching narratives– use the online platform Twine to create branching narrative environments

3D modeling – explore easy handheld applications for modeling 3D cultural heritage artifacts

 

2:30 PM -3:45 PM – live via Zoom

Geospatial Humanities & Mapping: select a workshop

StoryMaps JS- learn the basics of digital cartography and dataset creation for spatial storytelling

QGIS-  Explore digital mapping fundamentals using the open source, georeferenced data processing software QGIS

 

Day Two: Friday, August 20th

Reflection on Day 1, Discussion of DH in the Classroom, Quantitative Methods and Coding

 

11:00 AM -12:15 AM – live via Zoom

Text Analysis: select a workshop

Voyant Tools- learn the basics of text analysis with user-friendly web-based platform Voyant Tools

TEI and digital editions –create digital editions and text markup with TEI, the Text Encoding Initiative

Python- explore the computer programming language Python and its use for computational text analysis

 

1:00 PM -2:15 PM – live via Zoom

Data: select a workshop

Data visualization – make a variety of graphs and charts from your dataset

Network analysis – create a visual map to analyze connections between entities

Web scraping –create a spreadsheet from the information on a web page

 

2:30 PM -3:30 PM – live via Zoom
