MELLON FELLOWSHIPS IN DIGITAL HUMANITIES FOR FACULTY, POSTDOCS, AND GRADUATE STUDENTS

The College of Arts and Science is now accepting applications for several fellowship opportunities during the 2021-22 academic year for Vanderbilt faculty, recent Ph.D. graduates, and current graduate students. These fellowships are generously supported by an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant that funds the Vanderbilt Center for Digital Humanities, and all fellows are expected to participate in the activities of the center. For the purposes of these fellowships, digital humanities is defined as any intersection of digital technology and humanistic study and public humanities is defined as the work of engaging the broader public in reflecting on the relevance of the humanities to the current conditions of civic and cultural life.

Mellon Faculty Fellowships in Digital Humanities

Four one-year fellowships. Each provides supports for one course buyout as well as $10,000 in research funds to support digital scholarship during the 2021-22 academic year. Faculty fellows will help create and contribute to Digital Humanities Center academic programming while working on their own DH project. Preference will be given to applications describing projects with a clearly explained scope of work, definite deliverables, and that could serve as a steppingstone for future funding. Faculty are encouraged to discuss project ideas with the Center for Digital Humanities at any stage of the development process.

Eligibility and Application: All fulltime faculty are eligible to apply, although non-tenure track faculty are not typically eligible for course release related to the fellowship. Application requirements include a current CV (10 page limit), a letter of application that includes description of the DH project(s) to be pursued (2-3 pages), a brief supporting letter from the applicant’s Department Chair or Program Director, and a budget. All materials should be submitted as a single PDF to Dean Bonnie Dow via email to Brooklyn Bryant (brooklyn.bryant@vanderbilt.edu). Deadline for applications is February 26, 2021.

Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowships in Digital and Public Humanities

Two one-year fellowships for recent Ph.D. graduates from graduate programs in the humanities or qualitative social sciences at Vanderbilt. Each will provide affiliation with the Center during the 2021-22 academic year. Fellowship includes an academic-year salary of $52,704 with benefits and $5,000 in research funding. Postdoctoral fellows will work on their own digital and public humanities projects and will devote fifteen hours per week to supporting the operation of the Center for Digital Humanities. Depending on their skill sets, that support from postdocs could include: teaching DH modules, classes, and/or workshops, organizing events for the Center, and providing technical support. Application requirements include a current CV (5 page limit), a letter of application that includes description of potential DH/PH project(s) to be pursued (2-3 pages), and two letters of recommendation (one must be from Ph.D. advisor. If Ph.D. degree is not completed, letter from advisor must specifically speak to the likelihood of completion by July 1). CV and letter of application should be submitted as a single PDF to Dean Bonnie Dow via email to Brooklyn Bryant brooklyn.bryant@vanderbilt.edu). Letters of recommendation should be submitted separately by letter writers to Dean Bonnie Dow via email to Brooklyn Bryant (brooklyn.bryant@vanderbilt.edu). Deadline for applications is March 1, 2021.

Mellon Graduate Student Fellowships in Digital Humanities

Eight one-year fellowships. Each will provide affiliation with the Center during the 2021-22 academic year. The Mellon Graduate Fellowships in Digital Humanities are intended for students from Vanderbilt humanities or qualitative social sciences doctoral programs. The Graduate Fellows will pursue study of digital humanities through coursework, research, or dissertation writing, depending on their stage of doctoral study and the requirements of their doctoral programs. Fellowship comes with a one year stipend and benefits.

Application requirements include a current CV (5 page limit), a letter of application that describes the DH research goals of the fellowship (2 pages), and three letters of recommendation (one must be from your DGS). CV and letter of application should be submitted as a single PDF to Dean Bonnie Dow via email to Brooklyn Bryant (brooklyn.bryant@vanderbilt.edu). Letters of recommendation should be submitted separately by letter writers to Dean Bonnie Dow via email to Brooklyn Bryant (brooklyn.bryant@vanderbilt.edu).  Deadline for applications is March 1, 2021.
