  • Capstone Projects

    Our industry partners provide real-world challenges for our students through capstone projects. These projects allow students to apply their data science skills to solve pressing issues in fields ranging from healthcare to finance, sports, and beyond.

  • Guest Lectures and Co-Teaching

    Experts from our partner companies often engage with our students directly through guest lectures and co-taught courses. This collaboration brings practical insights and cutting-edge industry knowledge into the classroom, enhancing the learning experience.

What is a Capstone Project?

In the second year of the M.S. in Data Science program, students undertake a capstone project. These projects allow students to apply their skills to real-world problems provided by our industry partners. They work on defining a problem, analyzing relevant data, and delivering a solution over the course of a semester​​.

The Role of Industry Partners

Our industry partners play a vital role in the success of these projects. Here’s what you can expect when partnering with our students:

  • Project Scope: Often, our partners have projects ready to go, but we are also happy to collaborate with you to help scope out an appropriate project for a student, or group of students.
  • Methodology: Whether it's designing a database, developing a predictive model, or building an LLM-based RAG application, our students will work to deliver a final product that meets your specifications. 
  • Ongoing Collaboration: Regular check-ins (typically weekly) between students and industry partners ensure the project stays on track. You’ll provide feedback, and our students will adapt their work as needed to meet your goals.

Deliverables and Outcomes

By the end of the project, you can expect:

  • A comprehensive report detailing the methodology, data analysis, and results.
  • A GitHub repository with all project code, ensuring reproducibility.
  • A professional presentation summarizing the project outcomes and potential next steps​.
