Emotivity in Cloth: Collaborative Quilt Project
Crickett Harmer, School of Nursing
The “Emotivity” in Cloth project was inspired by my passion for quilting, and the desire to share the rich history and future of working with textiles in hand-crafted art. My hope is that this project will offer you the opportunity to experience the happiness and joy that surrounds quilting and sewing with others, and contribute to a quilt of lasting beauty and meaning. Participants are asked to create a textile design that will be used in a campus-wide collaborative quilt, and are invited to participate in putting the final quilt together with other individuals across campus.

Instructions:
You will be provided with a flannel design board on which to create your design. You may choose the fabric from the selection provided or you may use fabric of your own choosing. All you will need is a pair of scissors to cut and shape the fabric into your original design. Please know that I am available to help, assist and answer all questions during your creative process.
1. Start by selecting an emotion of your choice.
2. Using the flannel design board provided, cut and arrange the fabric into a design that reflects, conveys, or depicts the emotion that you have chosen. The flannel will allow you to play and audition arranged pieces directly on the flannel. The flannel will not be a part of the finished design block and is solely to provide a non-slip surface to position the cloth. The flannel is not to be sewn on or connected to the finished project.
3. You may sew the design together yourself or ask for others to help. You may hand or machine stitch the pieces together or hand or machine appliqué. Please do not use any glue or glue products as additional sewing and quilting may be required and thickness of the finished block is a factor.
4. Cover your design with the vinyl sheet and fully complete the questionnaire to submit.
5. Please consider weight and thickness as two additional layers will be added (a batting and a backing fabric) and then machine quilted in developing the collaborative quilt. The material must be able to pass under the needle.
6. If your design is an appliquéd piece (if the white flannel shows through) a backing fabric will be needed and can be provided. Temporary “505” adhesive spray may be used sparingly.
