SHIRE FAQ

When can I find more information about the 2024 program?

Details about the SHIRE program will be given to the ISR teachers and respective scientists and students are encouraged to seek out these individuals for current information. All students participating in SHIRE must be participating in the Interdisciplinary Science and Research Program at either John Overton High School, Stratford STEM High School, or Hillsboro High School.

What should I expect from SHIRE?

As a participant in SHIRE, you will both be a student and an intern for the program. You will be immersed in real-world laboratory research questions and try to address these questions with the assistance of an ISR scientist. Students will work 28 hours per week (24 hours onsite and 4 hours with POWER Youth).

What are the benefits of SHIRE?

SHIRE is a broader research opportunity for college-bound students. The program will provide you with an opportunity to see what higher-level research looks like in the comfort of a high school setting. The program can be useful as you try to determine your STEM interests and choose a career trajectory in college. The program also offers you a chance to impress college selection committees with your experience and your dedication to higher learning. Students will have the opportunity to attain course credit for participation in SHIRE including Honor’s Research 1 (Rising Juniors) and Work-Based Learning (Rising Seniors). Additionally, the collaboration with the POWER Youth initiative results in a paid experience that is an unique addition to the SHIRE experience.
