NMR facility awarded S10 grant

Posted by on Thursday, July 25, 2024 in News.

Congratulations to the Vanderbilt Biomolecular NMR Facility (VUBNMR) staff on the successful submission and approval of an National Institute of Health (NIH) S10 grant application for the purchase of a new 800 MHz NMR spectrometer. The new instrument replaces the existing spectrometer, installed 25 years ago, which was one of the first 800 MHz NMR spectrometers to be installed in a US facility and was a showcase instrument of the VUBNMR facility.

The new NMR spectrometer is state-of-the-art in magnet technology, electronics and cryoprobe technology.  It features a high-capacity sample changer as well as allowing 19F NMR spectroscopy, which is increasingly important in high throughput screening applications and drug discovery. It also assures continued access to TROSY NMR experiments on larger molecules and high-resolution spectra for 1H NMR, as well as high sensitivity 13C acquisitions.

CSB faculty Walter Chazin, Stephen Fesik, Douglas Kojetin, Jens Meiler, Chuck Sanders and Michael Stone, along with VUBNMR Facility Director Markus Voehler, participated in the successful grant submission. The School of Medicine Basic Sciences and the College of Arts and Sciences have pledged matching funds to supplement the funding received from the NIH.

“We’re extremely grateful to the NIH and to senior leadership for the matching funds that allows us to obtain a piece of equipment that will keep our facility at the cutting-edge of research nationwide!” Voehler said.

Delivery of the new spectrometer is expected by the end of 2025. ~ Karen D. Davis
