CSB Researcher Hassane Mchaourab and his lab pinpointed the role of an amino acid residue – a glutamate – that is essential for proton sensing & drug resistance. Using a proton gradient, PfMATE undergoes a structural change to allow its substrates to enter through the cytoplasm & get released outside the cell. Read the PNAS article.
