VCCI attends the 24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Katowice
The 24th Conference of the Parties (COP24) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was held in Katowice, Poland, in December, 2018. COP24 saw two weeks filled with sometimes tense negotiations aimed at completing the “Paris Rulebook,” a set of rules by which countries will operate as they implement and report on their commitments made under the Paris Agreement (a separate agreement to reduce global greenhouse emissions, made at COP21 in Paris, France). While a large portion of the Paris Rulebook was completed at COP22, disagreement remains as to some critical issues, which the parties agreed to address during COP25 in 2019. Also during COP24, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) produced it’s Special Report on 1.5°C of warming, a report the UNFCCC country members had asked for. The report warned that warming was occurring faster than expected, and many believe that increased ambition to lower green house gas emissions, and more focus on adapting to a world with a changing climate, is needed.
