Setting Up APA Academic Writer in your Course

Adding Academic Writer to the Content Area

  1. Open your course and navigate to the Content page
  2. Select the module in which you’d like to add Academic Writer from the left sidebar
  3. Select the Existing Activities dropdown, then choose External Learning Tools
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the pop-up window and choose Create New LTI Link
  5. Enter the information for the tool page you’d like to use. Each of these links will direct users to the same tool, but each one navigates to a different page within the tool.Option 1: Academic Writer
    This link will take students to the Academic Writer homepage.

    Option 2: Learning Center
    This link will take students directly to the Learn tab of the Academic Writer tool.

    Option 3: Reference Center
    This link will take students directly to the Reference tab of the Academic Writer tool.

    Option 4: Writing Center
    This link will take students directly to the Write tab of the Academic Writer tool.

  6. The Tool dropdown will be automatically be populated with Legacy LTI Tool. Select the Create and Insert button.
  7. From here, select the dropdown arrow next to the link you just created, then choose Edit Properties In-Place.

  8. Select the Open as External Resource checkbox, then reload the page.

Adding Academic Writer as a Navbar Link

  1. Open your course and navigate to Course Admin -> Navigation & Themes
  2. Select the navbar currently listed as “Active.” If the link for this navbar is not blue, please refer to our guide on editing your navbar
  3. Under Links, select the Add Links button
  4. Select Create Custom Link at the top of the window
  5. In the Name box, enter APA Academic Writer
  6. Under URL, select the Insert Quicklink button
  7. Select External Learning Tools from the list
  8. Scroll to the bottom of the list on the following page and choose Create New LTI Link.
  9. Enter the information for the tool page you’d like to use. Each of these links will direct users to the same tool, but each one navigates to a different page within the tool.Option 1: Academic Writer

  10. The Tool dropdown will be automatically be populated with Legacy LTI Tool. Select the Create and Insert button
  11. Click Create. You’ll receive a notification on your screen that your link has been created successfully
  12. Select Add to add the link you’ve created to your navbar
  13. Move your Academic Writer link where you’d like it to be among your other navbar items, then select Save and Close
