How can I control student access to quizzes?

Due Dates, Start Dates, and End Dates

The Due Date for a quiz dictates the date and time at which a quiz will be marked as late in Brightspace. This setting does not dictate when students can begin a quiz, or when they will be forced to submit their quiz attempt. This setting can be found on the main quiz settings page.

The Start Date and End Date determine when students will be able to open a quiz page and select Start Quiz. Reaching the end date will not kick students out of an in-progress attempt. These settings can be found in the Availability Dates & Conditions section of the quiz editor.

Time Limits

Time Limits determine how long a student has to complete a quiz after selecting Start Quiz. These settings can be found in the Timing & Display section of the quiz editor.

There are two kinds of Time Limits, as explained below:

  • Recommended Time Limit – Guides students in how long they should expect to take the quiz, but will not kick students out of the quiz once the time limit is reached, and does not penalize or flag students for exceeding the recommended time
  • Enforced Time Limit – Determines the point at which students will be forced to submit their quiz or receive a penalty for exceeding the time limit. A Grace Period can be given to allow students a short time to finish working after an Enforced Time Limit has been reached. Exceeded Time Limit Behavior settings determine whether student submissions will be allowed to continue working and/or penalized for exceeding the limit

Quiz Attempts

Attempt settings determine how many times a student may complete a quiz. These settings can be found in the Attempts & Completion section of the quiz editor.

Selecting Manage Attempts will allow you to choose both the number of attempts students are allowed and how their grade is calculated.

Release Conditions

Release Conditions are additional standards a student must meet to have access to a quiz. These standards may include completion of another task in the course (quiz attempt, assignment submission, etc) or enrollment in a specific group or section. These settings can be found in the Availability Dates & Conditions section of the quiz editor.

Special Access

Special Access allows specific students or sets of students to be given a different due date, start date, end date, time limit, or number of attempts than their peers. These settings are often necessary for students who have Accomodations with Student Access Services. These settings can be found in the Availability Dates & Conditions section of the quiz editor. To begin adding special access, select Manage Special Access.

The first set of radio buttons will allow you to dictate who should be given special access in accordance with these settings. Allow selected users special access to this quiz will allow you to give special access to a particular student or set of students without revoking access for the rest of the class. This is the more commonly used option. Allow only users with special access to see this quiz will only allow those specifically selected in the special access menu to view, start, and submit this quiz.

Choose Add Users to Special Access to continue. Here you will be given the opportunity to modify several access settings for the specific students you select at the bottom of the page. Make sure to click Save once you’re done modifying special access.

Password

The Password field will allow you to enter some text which your students will be required to input to take this quiz. This setting can be found in the Availability Dates & Conditions section of the quiz editor.

IP Restrictions

IP Restrictions are an advanced setting which will not be necessary for most courses. These settings allow you to dictate a set of IP addresses a student’s device must fall within to take this quiz. These settings can be found in the Availability Dates & Conditions section of the quiz editor.
