Professor of biostatistics and director of graduate studies Benjamin French is senior author of “Type 1 Error Control—Avoiding an Upset,” published online on April 21, 2025, in JAMA PediatricsCo-authored by University of Utah statistician John VanBuren, the editorial discusses how “using a common type I error rate across studies allows for ‘consistency, fairness and transparency’ when an intervention’s statistical significance is reviewed by organizations such as the US Food and Drug Administration or journals.” Dr. French has been statistical editor of the journal since 2013; it is the top-ranked pediatrics journal in the world, with an impact factor of 24.7.
