Tell us about your military service. What did you do? Where did you serve? What do you value the most about your military service?
I primarily served as a helicopter pilot for the US Navy, based out of San Diego, CA. However, I also had the opportunity to work in Naval Intelligence and as a “Shooter” on the newest aircraft carrier under construction, PCU JOHN F KENNEDY (CVN 79). The people with whom I had the opportunity to work and serve were certainly the best part of my military service. They taught me invaluable lessons along the way and molded me into a competent pilot and leader.
What are your thoughts on mentoring other students while at Vanderbilt? As a role model, what values do you want to share?
I look forward to mentoring students and hope that my story shows the variety of experiences the military offers, and the many lessons that come along with these diverse opportunities. I have flown helicopters around the world one year and the next sat in a cubicle analyzing event reconstructions. Within each of these very different roles I have learned critical life lessons that will serve me, and hopefully my community, for years to come. Additionally, as a mother and a female in Naval aviation, I hope to illustrate the ways in which women bring a vital and unique perspective to aviation and the military.
While at Vanderbilt, what will be the focus of your studies and how do you plan to use this knowledge in your future career?
I am attending Vanderbilt School of Medicine to hopefully graduate and train one day as a physician. I look forward to serving my community through medicine and healing.
What would you tell other veterans about the Bass Military Scholars Program?
The Bass Military Scholars Program is a wonderful opportunity to both stay connected to your military roots, while also becoming acquainted with and serving your new Vanderbilt and Nashville communities.
