Title: Exploring Autism Traits and Addressing their Challenges and Strengths; Excerpts from research in India and the USA
Abstract: The prevalence of autism across the globe is increasing, with about 1% of the global population (~ 1 in every 100 children) living with autism spectrum disorder (75 million individuals) (WHO, 2024). Since 2000, autism diagnoses have increased 178%. In part, this may be due to improved awareness, changes in diagnostic criteria, and better data collection methods. A substantial number of young individuals grappling with the challenges associated with autism have emphasized the urgency to provide adequate support and resources for children on the autism spectrum. These voices highlight the widespread impact of autism and underscores the need for deeper understanding. Parents, teachers, and professionals working with children, adolescents, or adults with autism face challenges due to the inter and or intra extremities or the spectrum of characteristics that each child on the spectrum displays. Apart from the unique challenges that autistic individuals face daily, the strengths associated, as established through research, cannot be refuted. However, the needs vary from person to person, and personalized approaches and strategies are needed. The findings discussed in this talk have important implications for further research and future directions for extracting the inherent potentialities of autistic individuals and enhancing their participation, inclusion, and quality of life.
