The Event
As part of Vanderbilt’s Quantum Potential Initiaitve, University Provost C. Cybele Raver has launched a podcast series that highlightssome of the thousands of innovative and interdisciplinary research initiatives taking place at Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt University Medical Center each year. In February there will be a special live recording of the podcast, featureing distinguished developmental psychologist Dr. David Yeager. This conversation will provide an opportunity to engage with Dr. Yeager’s work and discuss its implications for how we educate, mentor, and support young people in their journey toward success.
In conversation with Provost Cybele Raver, Dr. Yeager will explore groundbreaking research on brain development and social motivations in young people aged 10 to 25. Discover how adopting a “mentor mindset” can revolutionize interactions with youth, fostering their growth while simplifying our roles as educators, advisors, and mentors. Dr. Yeager will share insights on harnessing the neurobiological systems driving motivation and behavior in this crucial age group, offering strategies to reduce conflicts and empower young individuals. This event promises valuable perspectives for researchers, educators, and anyone passionate about motivating and understanding young minds.
Frist Center for Autism and Innovation Director Keivan G. Stassun will be providing opening remarks for the speaker.
The Speaker – Dr. David Yeager
Dr. Yeager is interested in understanding the processes shaping adolescent development, especially how social cognitive factors interact with structural and physiological factors to create positive or negative trajectories for youth. He is also interested in learning how to influence these psychological processes, so as to improve developmental and educational outcomes for youth.
His latest book, 10 to 25: The Science of Motivating Young People, offers profound insights into the psychological, social, and biological factors that shape motivation in adolescents and young adults, and provides the Frist Center for Autism and Innovation as an exemplar program in this book. His research provides invaluable strategies for educators, mentors, and leaders seeing to foster resilience, independentce, and achievement in the next generation.
