To a large degree the way in which history is written is determined by the questions we ask of it. Consider, for instance the two following questions: (1) Why did the Confederacy fail? and (2) Why did it last for four whole years? Which do you consider the more appropriate question to ask? Justify your choice with reference to the readings in EGMT, Chapter 11 and Gary Gallagher's The Confederate War.
