Using the letters of James Oglethorpe reproduced on OAK and the documents on pp. 113-115 of MTEG (and Jack Greene's discussion on pp. 138-150), consider how the debate over slavery in Georgia reflected larger debates over the purpose of the colony. Were slaves necessary for Georgia's success, or were they (as Oglethrope would have it) the ruination of the colony? Note that the word "success" here has to do a lot of work; what does it mean? Also, note that this assignment will require you to read a bit ahead in MTEG.
