Conrad: Who is to judge that one level
of civilization is better than another?
Many would agree that people flee to other, higher-level countries for
better lives, but these are merely basic human survival tactics. The political circumstances, the resources
in a particular area--these factors, too, have their influence on encouraging
people to emigrate.
To whom should be left the decision to control the fates of
generations based on things that are observed in the present day? Society has come to a time in its scientific
advancements where it has a strong amount of control on determining the fate of
future generations—those who have gained this knowledge should take care to use
that knowledge wisely. Years after
Brave New World’s publication, Huxley wrote, “The theme of Brave New World is
not the advancement of science as such; it is the advancement of science as it
affects human individuals" (Ward).Â
The more opportunity people have to control the genetic heritage of
society, the more the idea of a utopia will develop. Within this utopia is the possibility of the loss of human
dignity, individualism, and significance of human life. Eugenics is a misuse of science and
philosophy and has the possibility to make the world into a dreadful utopian society
(Ward).
