VIO Research Grants: Past Recipients
Women and Food (Category B)
PI: Kelly Oliver, Alton Jones Professor of Philosophy
Department/School: Philosophy, College of Arts and Science
Partner: University of Alberta, Canada
Description: The partnership culminates in a stimulating workshop to discuss how women’s close relationship with food practices are implicated in contemporary issues relating to power, popular culture, livelihood and even climate change. The project features Vanderbilt faculty and doctoral students spanning the departments of Anthropology, Philosophy and Religious Studies along with over twenty other participants from Athabasca, Mount Royal, Grant MacEwan and Alberta Universities. The three-day event will include panel presentations and discussions investigating topics such as food memories, food taboos, and the gendering of vegetarianism and meat consumption in a variety of media. Hosted in Banff, the workshop builds off extensive faculty and student research and coursework from both Universities pertaining to women and food. The international and interdisciplinary nature of the workshop will serve as a platform to expose new areas of research and discussion that should lead to additional publications and presentations following the conclusion of the event.
