Second Annual Commons Unplugged: October 25-31

The second annual Commons Unplugged environmental awareness week, from Sunday, October 25 to Saturday, October 31, 2015 will celebrate sustainability, natural resource conservation and energy conservation through various events focusing on Vanderbilt’s first-year student population. These events are presented by The Martha Rivers Ingram Commons, in partnership with the Sustainability and Environmental Management Office and the School for Science and Math at Vanderbilt.

As part of the Commons Cup Sustainability category, Houses can earn participation points for the greatest percentage of residents who attend and are engaged with this event. Points will only be awarded for those students who stay for the duration of the presentation. Students will also be participating in a week-long House energy conservation competition to earn points for the Commons Cup sustainability category. The week will include two events open to the Vanderbilt Community: the Green Fair and the Green Forum. The Green Fair will be held on Wednesday, October 28th in the Commons Center atrium from 5:30-7:30pm and will feature an organization fair focused on sustainability on campus and around Nashville. The Green Forum will be held on Thursday, October 29th from 5:00-6:00pm in the Commons Center multipurpose room and will feature Dr. Teresa Goddu of Vanderbilt’s English department discussing the importance of climate fiction.

Dr. Teresa Goddu is Associate Professor of English and American Studies at Vanderbilt University. Currently, she is developing a new research agenda in the environmental humanities. She serves as co-director for the Environmental Humanities Seminar at Vanderbilt’s Robert Penn Warren Center for the Humanities and as one of the organizers of the C19 Environmental Humanities Cluster. As Director of the Program in American Studies, she designed and directed “The Sustainability Project,” a three-year interdisciplinary initiative to foster Vanderbilt’s efforts toward sustainability, which resulted in a minor in Environmental and Sustainability Studies. As part of that broader initiative, she continues to co-direct “The Cumberland Project,” a faculty development workshop that aims to integrate sustainability across the curriculum at Vanderbilt. She was awarded The Chancellor’s Cup (2014) and named Alexander Heard Distinguished Service Professor (2013-14) for this work.
